Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted

1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup (65g) all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup (90g) chocolate chips

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar

1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (90g) chocolate chips

1/2 cup (90g) chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9 inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Stir until well combined.

        - Add the eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until smooth.

          - Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir until just combined, then fold in the chocolate chips. Ensure not to overmix.

            Make the Cookie Layer:

              - In another bowl, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until incorporated.

                  - In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, mixing until just blended.

                    - Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts if using.

                      Layering:

                        - Pour the brownie batter into the bottom of the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

                          - Drop spoonfuls of the cookie dough over the brownie layer. You can use a spatula to gently spread it out if you like, or leave it in dollops for a more rustic look.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Serve: Allow the browkies to cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cool, cut them into squares and enjoy!
